CEO
Mentoring
Joyner Strayer services include assisting CEOs in finding a qualified "CEO mentor", preferably an individual who has been in the CEO role and can assist in the executive's development of skills and capabilities. Mentoring is not a new idea in career and professional development. Surveys of successful businesses indicate that many top-level executives had assistance early in their careers. Someone took the time to "show them the ropes" and share experiences, successes, and failures. Mentoring conversations often covered insights on how they overcame work and personal challenges. The fortunate people being mentored in turn were more likely to mentor others more frequently than those executives who have not had a mentor. Mentors stimulate learning through ideas and information that can lead to personal and professional growth. Successful mentors are the kind of people who have an interest in cultivating talent and are more likely to be concerned with the needs of the individual than the needs of the organization. A mentor can actually play several roles with a company CEO or executive: the role of teacher, coach, positive role model, confidant, "opener of doors," protector, sponsor, and leader. Mentoring can have long-range positive effects for the organization and the individuals involved in the program.
